Monteisola municipality is located on the isle of the same name and includes another two smaller islets: St. Paolo and Loreto. Motor vehicles are not allowed in this lake haven except for residents’ scooters and bikes. The flora is particularly remarkable with the numerous olive groves that grow on the southern coast. Until the ’70’s, Monteisola was a record-holder as it was one of the main fishing net manufacturing centres in the world. It has lately surrendered to Japanese competitors’ large-scale industrial production. The age old traditional activity is still visible especially in the Peschiera Maraglio area. Another typical feature of the island is the wooden arches used to sun-dry the lake fish later served at the numerous typical restaurants and eating places on the island. Monte Isola cooking tradition is not only fish-centred: another local delicacy is the excellent coarse-grained salami produced on the inland hills
